Frequently asked questions

What is the Havens Hospices Lottery?

The Havens Hospices Lottery is a fun, easy and unique way of having the opportunity of winning some money and supporting Havens Hospices at the same time.

And how old do you need to be to play?

Players MUST be over 16 years old.

Can you guarantee the lottery is fair?

Yes! Every £1 entry has an equal chance of winning. Winning numbers are drawn by our External Lottery Management Company, Sterling Management Centre Ltd, using an industry standard ‘random number generator’. The Havens Hospice Lottery is regulated by The Gambling Commission to ensure it is conducted fairly, openly and transparently.

What are the lottery rules?

The lottery rules are available on our rules page. The purpose of these rules is to ensure you are informed about the terms of playing our lottery and to promote responsible gambling.

Can I play the lottery from overseas?

No, you must be a resident of Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) to enter.

Residents of Northern Ireland, Isle of Man and The Channel Islands are also excluded from entering as they are covered by their own gambling laws.

Can I choose my own game numbers?

No. Your unique lottery game numbers are chosen randomly and will be your numbers for the duration of your membership of our lottery. When you enter the lottery, you will be sent confirmation of your unique lottery game numbers in your welcome letter.

What are the prizes and chances of winning?

There is currently a 1 in 400 chance in winning a prize.

The current weekly prize fund is £1,500

  • 1st Prize: £1,000
  • 2nd Prize: £200
    • Our rollover prize increases by £200 each week if it's not won, up to a maximum of £10,000 where it then becomes a guaranteed prize for that week's draw.
  • 3rd Prize: £50
  • 4th Prize: 5 x prizes of £10
  • 5th Prize: 40 x prizes of £5

What is the rollover?

Each week a random six digit number is drawn. If it doesn’t match any current lottery numbers, the rollover pot increases by £200. If a winner hasn't been chosen by the time the rollover pot reaches £10,000, then we will draw a random lottery number from all the current players for a guaranteed winner!

How will I know if I have won?

After the draw has taken place every Friday we will list the lucky winners on our winner’s page.

We will contact you automatically if you are a lucky winner! If you do not wish to claim your prize you can just let us know by contacting us at fradmin@havenshospices.org.uk.

I have lost my game numbers. What should I do?

If you have lost your lottery game number(s), then do not worry. You can call our friendly lottery team on 03700 585919 or if you would prefer to email, you can email us at fradmin@havenshospices.org.uk.

How many entries can I have each week?

The maximum number of entries you can purchase per week is 10. (£10 per week).

Why is there a delay between registration and entry into the draw?

If you are setting up a Direct Debit to pay for your entries, we are legally required to provide you with a 10 day cooling off period to allow you to change your mind if you wish.

Once this 10 day period has passed, your Direct Debit will be deducted at the earliest date possible – this date will be outlined in your welcome letter.

Why are you promoting this type of fundraising, isn’t this gambling?

We have designed our weekly lottery to offer a new way for existing and new supporters to get involved with fundraising.

The Havens Hospices Lottery is legislated by The Gambling Commission, the body responsible for overseeing the way charities and other organisations run lotteries to ensure they are conducted openly, honestly and transparently. We appreciate that not all our giving opportunities will resonate with all our supporters but we hope that by offering choice, we’ll reach new and wider audiences and continue to engage our existing and valued supporters.

What is responsible gambling?

Responsible gambling is a term that means staying in control of how much time and money is spent on gambling related activity.

If you are worried about your gambling or that of someone close to you, BeGambleAware is the UK's leading authority on the provision of support, advice and counselling to people affected by gambling problems. If you or someone you know needs help or advice call the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 (lines open 24 hours a day) or visit www.begambleaware.org.

What is self-exclusion?

While most people gamble within their means, we recognise gambling can be a problem for some. Players can set up a self-exclusion agreement and we will take reasonable steps to prevent further participation, including removing their name and details from any marketing databases.

If you are worried about your gambling or that of someone close to you, Gambleaware can provide support and information. You can contact Gambleaware via the website, www.begambleaware.org or by calling 0808 8020 133.

How does Havens Hospices promote the lottery?

We promote by going door to door and through canvassers in public places.

We also promote the Havens Hospices Lottery through leaflets that are handed out at fundraising events, through letters to our supporters and through targeted digital marketing advertising.

We work closing with our canvassing companies to ensure they are following the strict guidelines laid out by the Fundraising Regulators. Staff are fully trained and CRB checked. Every representative must also carry ID.

You can find details of all our canvassers at havenshospices.org.uk/lottery.

How much of each £1 is donated to Havens? What happens to the rest?

When you sign up directly with the charity (via our website) 83p in every pound given to the Havens Hospices Lottery is donated to the charity. The remaining 17% spent on expenses and prize money.

Do you share your player’s data?

We promise to comply with all Data Protection Act requirements and protect personal data, including storing bank information provided securely. We NEVER sell details to any third parties.
